Dr Edna Adan Ismail - Midwife / Activist / Wonder Woman

In 1997, she retired from the WHO and cashed in her pension. Then she sold her Mercedes-Benz, her jewellery, even her dishwasher, and purchased a piece of land in Hargeisa. The land had formerly been a graveyard, then later a military parade ground, infamous for executions and torture. In 1997 it functioned as a local rubbish dump. But for Edna, this land represented the first concrete step towards fulfilling her lifelong dream of building a hospital in Somaliland.

Edna had just around $300,000 to make her dream hospital a reality, but in her mind she “never had any doubts”. When the money ran out and the hospital still had no roof or equipment, Edna plowed on, and, with the help of donors she had inspired across the U.S.A. and the Somali diaspora, a foundation called ‘Friends of Edna’s Hospital’ was able to raise enough money to help her complete the project.

Edna was 65 years old when she opened Somaliland’s first maternity hospital in 2002.

John HG Soe - Polio Survivor. Conference Speaker 2019

At the age of four months, I was stricken with polio. My parents, due to their superstitions and lack of understanding, abandoned me to the nuns of a Catholic orphanage in Medan, Indonesia. It was a huge orphanage of 200 children, and I remember listening to the bells and sounds of prayers.
On school holidays, relatives would come and pick up many of the children, but not me. I was always left alone. I had never been cuddled or carried on someone’s lap. I had never known my parents, but only the gentle kindness of the nuns. I was starving for the warmth of family love.

Australian Rotary Health

Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia.

We also provide funding into a broad range of general health areas, provide scholarships for rural medical and nursing students, as well as Indigenous health students. Australian Rotary Health provides funding into areas of health that do not readily attract funding, and promotes findings to the community.

Australian Rotary Health is a project of the Rotary Districts of Australia and is supported by Rotary Clubs.  We have a broad vision to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

Rotary Action Group for Family Safety

Families should be safe, and we should all feel safe in ours and our neighbours' families, and in our local community.

By sharing ideas and experiences, Rotary Clubs worldwide can begin to change perceptions of what is safe - and what sorts of behaviour are normal and acceptable; and which are not.

Our  Action Group provides pathways to resources and organisations: partners of Rotary Clubs who can assist families to break the cycle of family violence and invest in family safety.
