Gwenda Beed Davey’s book Girl Talk: One hundred years of Australian girls’ childhood looks at how life has changed for girls in Australia, between 1910 and 2010, through the voices of ten Australian-born women.
Dr Gwenda Beed Davey initially trained as a psychologist at Melbourne University. She has taught child development, multicultural and folklife studies at several Victorian Universities.
In 1986 she was invited by the Australian Government to join the Committee of Inquiry into Folklife in Australia, after which she changed her profession into cultural heritage studies.
She has worked for the National Library of Australia and was the first project manager for the extensive Bringing Them Home (Stolen Generations) oral history project.
In 1998 Gwenda was made a Member in the Order of Australia (AM), and in 2011 was a Scholar in Residence at the National Film and Sound Archive, researching early Australian film for her Girl Talk book. She is now an Honorary Associate of Museum Victoria.
Gwenda’s interest in Australian girls’ history comes from her own childhood in a family of many dynamic women, and a lifetime of stories told about family history. She was born in Sydney, grew up in Altona and now lives in Melbourne and Ballarat.
