Last Week's Guest Speaker  : Jonothan Levin

Jonathan was born in Johannesburg South Africa in the 1950’s. A time when the ‘apartheid shadow’ was well hidden (at least to him) and life looked rosy and good.  At age 17 (on completing high school), he was drafted into the South African Army.  His parents decided this was not a good idea, registered him into the University of Haifa, Israel and sent him packing on a one way ticket. This was an exciting and terrifying time.

After spending 5 years in Israel, completing the Israeli army and fighting a stint in the Lebanon war, he met his Australian wife while living on a Kibbutz. He moved to Melbourne in the early 80’s, has 3 grown children and a grandchild (one living in London, one in Denmark and one in Bali) and after 40 years with his wife, has now chosen to ‘jump back into the river’ , to seek his true journey home.

Martin Reports on OGAKI STUDENTS VISIT

Here is a Translation of an insert from letter we have received from our friendship club on Ogaki West,  Japan.

Dear Mrs. Yoshiko Stynes & Mr. Martin Verhoeven.

I am sorry about a long silence.   I would like to thank you sincerely for organising the City of Ogaki’s junior school exchange program,

It has come to fruition because of your support in every aspect.  We would like to express our sincere thanks to you.

The group leader, Mr. Takuro Koyabu & 11 members of the delegate have left Ogaki today.  They will be away from Japan for 8 days till 22nd August.

During that time, they are attending the BBQ party, hosted by the R/C of Glen Eira, and the adults’ visit to Yoshiko's place.

It’s all new experience as we have never had that kind of program in the past that the leaders are deeply moved by your kindness.

Though it’s under the name of the “ Friendly City “, we feel  it’s is so important to have someone like yourselves.  Please pass on our sincere thanks to the members of R/C of Glen Eira.

Kind regards,  Mitsuo Ando,  The President R/C of Ogaki West.

Rotary - People of Action...

Rotarian Action Groups help Rotary clubs and districts plan and carry out community development and humanitarian service projects in their area of expertise.

Our purpose is to mobilize Rotarians and provide global awareness and focused ACTION in the continuing struggle to preserve and protect endangered species. We will be supporting and promoting new and ongoing joint projects with Rotary and Rotaract clubs located in the areas of concern.

Our efforts will start with a particular focus on the rhinos, elephants and mountain gorillas  in Africa, the Orangutans and Pygmy Elephants in Borneo, where poaching and habitat loss is a danger not only to these rare animals, but to the economic survival of the indigenous people who rely on eco-tourism for their livelihood.
